A Parallel Programming Approach to Solve the Exact Cover Problem

In this paper we present the solution of large exact cover problem using Message Passing Interface. The exact cover problem is a kind of constraint satisfaction problem. The exact cover problem is mathematically interesting to solve different mathematical puzzles and may arise practical interests in different fields. The exact cover problem is NPcomplete and the computational complexity to solve such problems grows exponentially with the growth of input size. Experiment shows that parallel programming using MPI is an answer for solving large exact cover problems. We have implemented a parallel programming approach using MPI to implement Donald Knuth’s Algorithm X using Dancing Links technique to solve the exact cover problem. Experimentally we have shown that our solution achieves important speedup.
